Did you know that cotton in Europe first arrived in Sicily? It came to our land thanks to the Saracens just before the year 1000, although it took at least another three centuries before it spread. For many years, it was considered a luxury product on a par with silk. The importance of this textile fibre increased exponentially with the discovery of America, where local species other than those of Asian origin were found. The cultivation of cotton plants soon spread, especially in what is now known as South America, but it reached its peak in 1792 when, thanks to new technologies, the cost of production dropped dramatically.
