What is wool made of?
It is made of alpha-keratin fibres, which are present in the fur of all mammals.

How much wool does a sheep produce?
It depends on the breed, its diet and the period when it was previously sheared. On average, a sheep can produce from a minimum of two kilos of wool to a maximum of 30.

And how many jumpers is this equivalent to?
The wool of a Tasmanian sheep yields up to 7.7 jumpers, or 61 pairs of socks. The woolier Shaun sheep, on the other hand, can produce up to 35 jumpers or 280 pairs of socks.

Has it always been so common?
No, in ancient times it was a very valuable commodity. So much so that in 1192 part of the ransom paid to free the English king Richard the Lionheart was paid in sacks of wool (as many as 50,000).
