Around the 16th century, Highlanders adopted tartan as a symbol of cultural belonging: ancient Scottish society was based on the structure of clans that settled in an area. The traditional dress was the plaid, a cut of woolen cloth woven with threads colored with berries and roots that when crossed generated the characteristic tartan pattern of that clan. From this custom came the kilt: born to differentiate family units it later became the star of traditional Scottish costume.
The "tartan affair" we can easily find even today in the English Royal House, but nevertheless, it is curious to note how the cultural identity of this fabric has also lent itself to subversive and punk interpretations such as those that characterize Vivienne Westwood's style path.
A tartan motif is also at the root of the success of Burberry, the classic British brand that has the "Burberry Check" tartan motif as its flag in the lining of its raincoats.
History, culture, tradition, and rebellion seem to be part of the symbolic fabric of tartan. Parallel to the punk movement, in the 1970s tartan was an emblem of the Preppy and Ivy League girls with a feminine and bon ton connotation. Also, in the 1990s tartan squares, commonly called plaid in the U.S., made a comeback with the Grunge movement.
In short, tartan carries with it a varied and characterized history and imagery-just the way we like it!
