For most of the general public, the difference between shuttle woven and knitted woven fabrics is certainly not clear. To simplify the matter, we can say that the first ones are produced by looms in the traditional way sending a shuttle through the warp and weft to create any required effect, like checks or stripes, with the result of a more durable and substantial cloth. For the jersey we use a totally different loom called circular knitting machine. The yarns are shuttled in circle creating a series of turns and counter turns, resulting in loops. The result is a fabric naturally more elastic and fluid if compared to a warp and weft looms. With the big demand of jersey during the 70s and 80s, the techniques and the machineries have taken a step further and nowadays there are many factories which are specialized in the production of only knitted fabrics and jerseys.
