Silk fiber, depending on the processing procedures it has undergone, gradually becomes more and more valuable because at each process a part of it, "waste," is lost and then reused at a later stage to form other types of yarn, thus increasing its quality more and more.
Here are the types of silk fiber obtained at each degree of processing:
the raw silk fiber, which has undergone only an initial softening and contains all the gummy part (of little value);
the raw silk fiber obtained after light washing;
the half-cooked or softened silk fiber, which has undergone a good washing through which much of the gum is removed so as to obtain a good product;
the silk fiber without the gummy part obtained by a very thorough washing process, the most valuable.
