The use of wool as a textile material dates back thousands of years, but in the Middle Ages, Scottish plaid fabric began to stand out. The earliest forms of checkered fabrics date back to Celtic and Roman weavings, but the Scottish tartan, as we know it today, originated in the Highlands around the 6th century AD. In the 17th century, the Highland clans began to use tartan not only as clothing but also as a symbol of belonging. Each clan developed its specific pattern, with unique combinations of colors and stripe widths, making tartan a true visual 'signature' for clan members. However, this practice of associating a particular tartan with a clan was only codified in the 19th century. In 1746, following the Jacobite rebellion, the British government banned the use of tartan in the Highlands through the Dress Act as a measure to eradicate Scottish culture and control the rebellious clans. However, the ban was lifted in 1782, and in the 19th century, tartan experienced a true revival, thanks in part to the British royal family's interest in Scotland. Queen Victoria, in particular, helped bring tartan back into fashion, making it a symbol not only of Scottish identity but also of elegance and aristocracy. From the 19th century onwards, tartan wool spread abroad, becoming a symbol of style, especially in the United Kingdom, and later worldwide. Today, it is used not only in traditional Scottish fashion (such as kilts) but also in modern clothing, blankets, accessories, and even home designs. In summary, plaid wool has a long history intertwined with Scottish cultural traditions, clan identity, and the evolution of Western fashion, becoming an icon both locally and globally.
