Blue jeans is the name given to denim pants because of their typical blue color.
The history of jeans begins in Italy-precisely in Genoa-where dock workers and sailors made their uniforms from a sturdy cotton fabric dyed with indigo, which gave the cloth its characteristic blue color.
This fabric, produced in Italy, which departed from the port of Genoa to reach international markets, was known as "blu di Genova," or "blue de Genes" in French - later adapted into English: "blue jeans."
